A whole week of celebration ends this weekend for hundreds of former and current PCC employees and BYU Hawaii Alumni, many of whom travelled from as far away as New Zealand and the Mainland East Coast to join a grand production in honor of the Polynesian Cultural Center's 50th Anniversary as one of Hawaii's biggest Tourist destinations. It was such a beautiful week that included firesides, rehearsals, parties, a formal Ball and alot of aching muscles for those who hadn't danced like this for years.
The Samoans are ready. Tipa, Pati and the men look good.
The week culminating with a major production by these returning stars who used to perform for the Center during their years as students at BYU Hawaii brought back many memories. Many of these 40-70 year olds were the original performers back in the day when the Center first started. Everyone spent time between rehearsal reminiscing of the daily schedule of attending class during the day and then going to the PCC to dance or work before going back to the dorms, homes or library to study. It was a means to attain your degree without accumulating debt, because the school would deduct from the pay checks each week enough to cover the tuition, food and room. It was a blessing for those who arrived from Samoa without the means to pay for their education.
A last minute run through before going on stage.
It was most definitely a time to reacquaint with old friends many of whom had been separated for over ten years. The eyes may have dimmed and hair greyed but the enthusiasm and personalities remained the same. Jokes were many and stories retold, all in a spirit of joy and good fun. The awkwardness and angst of youth gone there were only pleasant conversations and sincere embraces and kisses. Friends hung out again just like it was 1978 all over again.
Sianini and friend are just chilling before performing.
